If Medicare refuses to pay, we do not bill our partners.

When we accept a Part B case, we handle it from start to finish.

What is Part B Billing?

What Is Medicare Part B Billing?

Wound care in long-term care settings involves two types of Medicare coverage: Part A and Part B—each with distinct roles and billing structures.

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and home health services. For wound care, Part A typically applies to:

- Hospital stays

- The first 100 days of care in a skilled nursing facility

Wound care during this period is bundled into the facility’s daily Medicare payment and is not billed separately.

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B covers physician services, outpatient care, and specific medical services or supplies that are not covered by Part A.

Once a patient surpasses 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, ongoing wound care generally falls under Medicare Part B, and these services are billed separately from the facility’s daily rate.

Important Notes About Part B Billing:

- Part A and Part B are not interchangeable.

- Part B requires the patient to:

- Pay a monthly premium

- Meet a yearly deductible

- Cover co-pays, unless they have secondary or supplemental insurance

- Think of Part B as similar to a traditional insurance plan in how it handles claims and reimbursements.

What Does Medicare Part B Cover for Wound Care?

Part B coverage includes two service categories:

1. Medically Necessary Services

- Covers services and supplies needed to treat a medical condition

- Must align with accepted standards of medical care

- Does not include holistic or naturopathic therapies

2. Preventive Services

- Aims to prevent illness or detect it early

- Includes services like diagnostic screenings and routine evaluations

What is Part B Billing?

WHAT is PART B BILLING?

Two types of Medicare services are involved in wound care:

PART A – Covers Inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care and home health care. Typically, PART A Medicare covers patients wound care while in the hospital and the first 100 days in a nursing home. These services are included as part of the daily Medicare payment for patient care.

PART B – Covers physician services, outpatient care and other medical services which are not otherwise covered under PART A Medicare. Generally, after 100 days in a nursing home, patients wound care treatments fall under PART B Medicare and are paid separately from daily care and other treatments.

Medicare Part A & Part B are NOT interchangeable! An important note about Medicare PART B Billing is that each patient must pay a premium each month; pay a yearly deductible and co-pay unless the patient has co-insurance. Part B is similar to having a regular commercial insurance plan. Difference being, Medicare PART B coverage only includes two (2) types of services:

1. MEDICALLY NECESSARY SERVICES: Includes services and supplies needed to treat your medical condition. For patients to be covered, the service must be within the standards of medical practice. Meaning, holistic or naturopathic treatments are NOT covered.

2. PREVENTIVE SERVICES: Includes healthcare services that are necessary for preventing illnesses rather than treating illnesses. Methods of early detection such as diagnostic exams for cancer are considered as preventive medicine. The Wound Pros team have specialized expertise in supplying wound care products the under PART B Medicare plan. Our team will ensure that your patients get the products they need and that Medicare Part B is properly billed.
